Elche, the Final Frontier

PLD Space, based in the Science Park of Alicante University in Elche, is the first Spanish company to obtain a contract to test liquid rocket engines developed at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) at Teruel Airport.

PLD Space was founded in 2011 by Raúl Torres and Raúl Verdu to provide commercial and scientific access to Space in Europe.

13 European companies are involved in the tests which by April 2018, will see a Spanish rocket called Arion 1 launched 220 kilometres into space, with research material aboard, and then returning to its base.

The first successful test of the engine was already carried out in April 2015, which may have influenced the North American Kairos Society when it named PLD’s co-founders among the 100 most influential entrepreneurs under 30 years of age.
