Turn Turn Turning Torso

Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava has been honoured with the Ten Year Award by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat for his tower block in Malmo, Sweden, the Turning Torso, inaugurated in 2005.

The 190 metre high building is the tallest residential block in Sweden and the first of its kind in terms of its shape.

The building was commissioned by HSB Malmö in an attempt to revitalize a declining industrial area of the city.

The building is self-contained energy-wise, using removable sources of power such as solar, geothermal, wind and hydro-electricity. The building even has its own system to convert waste into biogas.
