Caixa Forum – Rembrandt: A World in Engravings

https://caixaforum.org/es/valencia/p/rembrandt.-un-mundo-en-grabados-valencia

The Caixa Forum in Valencia is consistently one of the best museums in the city.  The curators consistently deliver hight quality exhibitions and the collaboration with the British Museum – Rembrandt – Un Mundo en Grabados (A World in Engravings) – is no exception.

The Dutch painter is considered one of the greatest visual artists in the Western world but was also a renowned printmaker.  The exhibit brings together dozens of his engravings which is significant given that only about 300 survive today.

As with many Caixa Forum showings there is a combination of artwork and multimedia.  In this case the videos that are part of the exhibition help to tell the story of the engravings as well as the process of printmaking.  The introduction video sets the scene for Rembrandt as an engraver but it is key to watch the short film on how etchings are done and the complete printmaking process.

The first section of the show establishes him as the portraitist with a series of self-portraits. Even if you might not have seen any Rembrandt etchings before, these feel quite familiar and help to establish his artistic style.  These are followed by portraits of the businessmen that were significant patrons to Rembrandt.  Prints of the female form complete a look at his portraits.

This segues into a section that explores his works of natural subjects such as the human form, animals and as studies of still life.

The exhibit continues with a look at his landscape technique, and the experiments that he made with different forms, ranging from the very plain to complex subjects.  The engravings are accompanied by excellent commentary such as (English translation):

This engraving is the only one that Rembrandt made of a still life: the life-size shell of a poisonous sea snail, the Conus marmoreus, native to the Indian Ocean and which arrived on ships of the Dutch East India Company. It was a commodity much appreciated by the wealthy collectors of Amsterdam, and Rembrandt knew how to enhance its brightness on the darkness of the background.

A major part of the exhibit is given over to his depictions of the Bible and religious subjects for which he is so well known.

This is another major exhibition by the Caixa Forum and is not to be missed.  It runs through February 7, 2027.
