Spanish tennis probably reached its peak when Rafa Nadal was number one in the world, but a little further down the ratings, the Valencian Community were two bright stars; David Ferrer from Alicante province:
and Roberto Bautista from Castellón.
In January 2016 Bautista won the Auckland Tournament in New Zealand and in February was champion in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The victories in Auckland and Sofia were the third and fourth major tournaments that Roberto has won, having triumphed in Stuttgart in 2014, and at Hertogenbosch the same year.
He started playing professional tennis in 2005.
Bautista also reached the quarter finals in Madras, India. Bautista himself is now classified as the world’s number 17th best player. His best ever ranking was in April 2015, when he was classified as the world’s number 15 singles player.
In October 2016 he defeated the world number 1, Djokovic in Shanghai.
