The strawberry got its name because in the bad old days before the invention of plastics, straw was used to protect this delicate plant from all sorts of climate and pest threats.
The result was strawberry fields forever.
Today, in order to maintain the shelf life of fruits and vegetables, science is lending a hand, with the creation of packaging that not only protects products, but also prolongs their life-spans.
The Project is led by ITENE, the Valencian Instituto Tecnológico del Embalaje, Transporte y Logística, and has enabled the development of packaging that can reduce or avoid the growth of the micro-organisms that allow perishable foodstuffs to rot.
