The Institute of Biomechanics (IBV), a technological centre of reference in health, well-being and quality of life of people, continues to implement different initiatives to help in the face of the emergency caused by the coronavirus, on which it has been working since the beginning of the crisis.
One of the actions undertaken by IBV, in this emergency situation, has been the design of facial protection screens for professionals in contact with people affected by the coronavirus, with the support of the Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness (IVACE).
IBV joins with this action a cooperation initiative between the General Direction of Industry, Energy and Mines and the General Direction of Pharmacy and Health Products. “We have responded from the technology centre to the challenge of facilitating donations of face protection screens that meet safety criteria; we have also designed our own model of a screen, of very low cost, which we offer freely to help our professionals during the COVID-19 crisis”, assured IBV’s Director, Javier Sánchez Lacuesta.
Ergonomic and resistant
The face shield designed by IBV consists of an adjustable headband for each user and a transparent film that protects the face. It has an ergonomic curvature in its lower part that facilitates mobility in neck flexion position, leaving space in its upper part to prevent condensation.
It is very lightweight and simple to manufacture because it consists of only two elements that are easily assembled. It is recyclable, highly rigid and transparent, and has high resistance to impact, thermal deformation or weathering, among other properties
This design complies with the technical and safety criteria established in the articulated protocol from the Generalitat Valenciana. The new screens are being manufactured with laser cutting machines in IBV’s own facilities, which expect to donate more than 10,000 units in the next two months to health centres and residences in the Valencian Community.
The protection screens designed by IBV show the message “THANK YOU”, which will also be included in the rest of the products designed by IBV to fight against the coronavirus. In this way, “IBV wants to pay a small tribute to all the sanitary personnel and to the rest of professionals in contact with people affected by the coronavirus, who always, but especially in these difficult days for all, are taking care of all of us”, added the head of Processes and Strategy of IBV, Erika Martino.
IBV continues working in collaboration with hospitals, universities, other entities and companies, in projects of fast development of medical products and authorised protection equipment, as well as other innovative solutions, always watching over the safety of use, with the intention of offering them as soon as possible.
“From the IBV we are very proud to be able to contribute with our activity, offering our capability, knowledge and infrastructures, together with the rest of REDIT’s centres and in collaboration with the public administration, to stop this pandemic and to contribute to mitigate its effects, present and future”, concluded Erika Martino.
