Han Woo

Hanwoo is one of four breeds of cattle native to Korea. Originally a working animal, it is now raised to be braised. And that’s what goes on at the Han Woo restaurant in Valencia’s San José neighbourhood, where each table has a silver snake slithering up (or down) to/from the ceiling above a grill.

Around the grill are slots where you cook the typical mix of cheese and corn.

They bring the meat you order and you cook it yourself, with full autonomy and independence.

The restaurant is light and airy, with separate booths for the most part, the service efficient and friendly, and the toilets are a joy to behold.

Best of all, my youngest son Mark paid so I’ve no idea how much it cost.
You can order genuine Korean beers, although I found them a bit weak compared to Spanish brews.
There are a great variety of meats, both beef, pork and chicken, and various other dishes with rice and a wonderfully spicy pasta.

There are some delicious starters, including pickled cabbage and carrot, peanuts and fermented onion (tastier than it sounds).

With the meats you get an individual dipping tray, including sesame seeds, soy sauce and a spicy chutney.
But my favourite was a humble sausage, carved to look like the feathers of an arrow, or a sex toy, or something even more incongruous.

Han Woo is located at Carrer del Poeta Artola, 11.
