Nagato

Nagato is a city in the Yamaguchi prefecture of Japan, a town in Nagano prefecture, a province itself, one of the oldest of Japan; or, for our younger viewers, Yuki Nagato, a character in the Haruhi Suzumiya series, or Nagato or Pain (Naruto), an antagonist in the Naruto series; and it was also a battleship in the Japanese navy.

However, for Valencians, Nagato is one of the older Japanese restaurants offering the buffet system with a printed menu, rather than the open trough system where everybody helps themselves to vast amounts of displayed foodstuffs without any name, description or snazzy photo to offer guidance.

Located in the United Nations of restaurants, C/ Conde Altea, where tourists are thinner on the ground than other eatery areas, at the time of writing, August 2018, you could get an 8.50€ menu (9.95€ evenings and holidays), or go for the buffet at 10.95€ midday, or the more extensive 16.95€ evening option.

The waitresses all wear Vietcong black, and are in abundance, and the décor is simple, almost zen-like in its austerity, apart from the rather threatening samurai swords dangling near the exit, to dissuade runners no doubt.

The sweets include green tea and red bean ice creams, and, as the saying goes, you can eat as much as you want in the Roman way, which you can’t do in any of the nearby Italian restaurants.

My favourite, as always, the sushi-maki selection presented on a little wooden ship.

Calle Conde Altea 33.
