Insect Fit: Kung Fu Didn’t Anticipate This

It’s difficult to forget the iconic tv series ‘Kung Fu’ starring David Carradine, whose master referred to him affectionately as ‘Grasshopper.’

Some Valencian entrepreneurs (pardon my French) have a different idea about those amusing insects, and have come up with a solution for those fitness freaks who would rather not pump up their muscles with steroids.

InsectFit sells supplements made from grasshopper flour (I hate to think how they make it), which are apparently rich in amino acids, which is indubitably a good thing as they help muscular recuperation.

The product is sold as an energy bar, and as the creators point out, it is a seriously ecological product, using 2,000 times less water and 100 times less pollution than other livestock production centres.

More protein than beef or spinach (Popeye must be turning in his grave) and ten times more B12 than salmon, 5 times more magnesium than meat, twice as much fibre as rice and twice as much calcium as milk; it’s a wonder we didn’t start eating them earlier.

Perhaps it’s because they are insects! Or perhaps because we are still planning to study Kung Fu with the master one sweet day.

Gabriel Vicedo (CEO) and Alberto Mas (COO) both of whom are from Crevillent (Alicante), are responsible for the initiative that might eventually make those hot, summer nights just a little bit quieter.

After the energy bars, and after focusing on gyms, the pair plan to open up the market by creating pastas, hamburgers and even sweets based on bugs.
