El Garatge: Come on Baby Light my Cheese

I don’t always take kindly to waiters blowtorching my meal; especially when I’ve already sytarted nibbling, but at El Garatge, surprising things have a habit of happening.

It’s a fun place, very popular with young people, although they don’t mind an occasional table of elderly people who tend to spend more money.

I had thought the balloons were for us, as our party was celebrating two birthdays, but in fact they were for an Erasmus student, and at one point there was an outbreak of singing from her friends, one of whom was clearly a professional opera singer, or should be.

The restaurant has a Phillipine cook, and as such, many of the dishes have a Phillipine touch, or three, and on more than one occasion there was an inferno of flames flaring up in the kitchen, although you got used to it after the first three times and realised it was normal.

The menu is interesting, and there are always a few additional dishes as the fancy takes the cook, such as cow’s cheek in the Phillipine style, with all kinds of fruit and spices mixed in there.

The interior is very small, and I imagine that on a rainy evening it must be deserted as all the life is outside on the terrace, which is adjacent to a small park, which may be why quite a few people, diners or otherwise, tend to bring small children.

Red tuna is a clear favourite, served in both Tataki style and Tartar, and there are a variety of croquettes and cheese-based salads, which are caramelised with the blowtorch by the waiter (at least I think he was the waiter).
