Bringing Back Maurice to Valencia

A project to bring Maurice Reyna back to Valencia has been launched with the participation of Valencia International.

And who exactly is Maurice Reyna?

In 1960 a British film crew visited Valencia during the Fallas festival to make a film in English. Charles Crichton, the man who would later direct John Cleese’s ‘A Fish Called Wanda’, was the director of ‘The Boy Who Stole a Million’, for which he also wrote the screenplay.

It is set in Valencia and concerns a young boy working in a bank, who steals money (hence the title) to help get his father’s taxi back.

He is then chased all over the place by police and gangsters, passing by such emblematic landmarks as La Lonja, Torres de Serranos and Quart, Mercado Redondo, Plaza del Ayuntamiento; all of them the way they were back in 1960.

The boy was Maurice Reyna, who was ‘discovered’ in London, where he lived for several years. Later he would become a musician and the cultural attaché at the Venezuelan embassy in Tokyo.

If funds can be raised to bring Maurice and his wife to Valencia, as well as talking about the making of the film, he has agreed to give some concerts, performing on the Cuatro, a Venezuelan four string guitar, which originates from 17th century Spain.

The money will be raised using the Crowdfunding method. Unfortunately the bank didn’t accept Maurice’s collateral.
