Every year Caxton College opens its doors for children from the general public to enjoy summer camps with full days of learning English and playing sport, whilst following all of the Health Department’s protocols to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
After a year of restrictions, children deserve for us to help them make up for lost time and missed emotions, even whilst taking all precautions possible. For them to slowly regain what they’ve left behind, summer activities in the outdoors with friends are a good way for them to experience forgotten feelings again.
Specialists in the field have been warning about the effect of the pandemic on the mental health of young people, and summer leisure activities are an intensive way for children to begin to socialise again, to overcome their fears and feel more confident, to ease their misgivings and even to help them recoup forgotten skills.
Sport: health and learning for all children
Practising sport at Caxton College this summer involves a number of disciplines, including tennis, football, basketball and swimming. Perfecting technique is the common thread in the Sport Camp which aims to build on the skills that children have acquired during the year and perfect techniques in their chosen sport. Several of these camps will have instructors from Ireland so that the players can practise their English in an effective and engaging way at the same time they advance their sport performance.
These camps are complemented by a leisure programme so that during their breaks, players can rest, cool off in the pool or participate in creative workshops whilst eating healthy meals that are appropriate for their level of activity.
Learning English and other languages
Outdoor learning and making new friends in a multicultural environment is at the centre of these camps. Native and bilingual teachers ensure that the children who attend Caxton College’s English Language Camp improve their level of English through fun activities where they can assimilate new concepts easily and without too much effort. This kind of learning through play promotes their curiosity for learning, independence and cooperation.
German and French are the keys to the Challenge Camp, where young children can learn these languages through play, traditional songs and a variety of fun activities geared to their age group.
For the more artistic, creative and scientific children who already have a good level of English, the Discovery Camp is a good option for them to develop their imagination and continue to reinforce their knowledge of the English language. At the same time, and like the other camps offered, they will have sport activities, time to cool off in the pool and healthy lunches every day.
Any of these options offers children the opportunity to broaden their social circles, enjoy the outdoors, improve their language skills and, above all, have fun in an environment designed for them to feel happy and enjoy life with a radiant smile.
