It’s hard to imagine bombs falling on Valencia, and yet during the Spanish Civil War Valencia was attacked mercilessly by German and Italian planes helping Franco and getting in some practice for World War II.
Evidence of those bombings can still be found on the city streets, where the period signs pointing out the location of the air raid shelters (refugios) remind us that not so long ago a bloody conflict tour this peaceful friendly city apart.
The ‘refugios’ can be seen in Plaza Tetuan, next to the Columbian consulate, in Calle Serranos, behind the towers, and in Calle Alta.
Today they are locked, and hopefully will remain so.
