Valencia has always been a land of music, with more village bands per square foot than orange trees; and Gustavo Gimeno is a good example.
Having led the Luxembourg Philharmonic since 2015, he is now ready for new challenges, and has accepted taking over the Toronto Symphonic Orchestra for the 2020/1 season.
Gustavo, who was born in Valencia in 1976, has lived for decades in Amsterdam, where he was principal percussionist with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
From 2012 he was the Concertgebouw’s assistant conductor under Mariss Jansons, and made his debut conducting the orchestra in 2014, standing in for Mr. Jansons.
Gimeno has also conducted the Cleveland Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In 2019 he will make his debut with the Zurich Opera, conducting a production of Verdi’s Rigoletto.
In 2019 he will return briefly to Valencia, where Gustavo will conduct Gustav Mahler’s 9th Symphony, memorable for its use in the film Death in Venice.
