Valencia’s international cinema festival, Cine Jove, will in 2016 have a very special guest, Cambodian film director Rithy Panh.
All of Pahn’s family were victims of the genocide of Pol Pot, and he was the only one to escape, at the age of 13.
After a time spent in a refugee camp in Thailand, he was granted asylum in France, where he studied cinema in Paris, although he started off studying carpentry; however, after using a video camera at a party, he was hooked on film.
His 1994 film Rice People competed at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, and was the first Cambodian film submitted to the Oscar Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.
