The Blue Frog

With all the names you could possibly choose to make your restaurant sound attractive and your meals appetising to potential customers, I somehow doubt that Blue Frog would have been my first choice.

It doesn’t exactly conjure up the visual image I would want to find on my plate. Perhaps they were searching for a mythical quality.

The Blue Frog is another burger restaurant, designer Burger even, which have become popular recently, and I had thought this was to attract the young and foolish, although I found myself joined by people of an age far closer to retirement than to school.

The decor on the other hand is quite modern in a retro kind of way, and I think Tolkien may have been an inspiration when designing the ring-themed light shades or the central tower looming over the centrally placed bar, looking worryingly like a missile silo.

The walls were scraped down to bare brick, giving a nice contrast to blue neon, and the signage was in American. In fact I went to the Restroom hoping for a relaxing lie down but got the strangest looks from people constantly interrupting my rest.

The large TV screen was tuned to the Real Madrid channel but fortunately was in silent mode while loud rock music accompanied images of Iker Casillas’s debut match.

One of the nice things is the view through large windows of Valencia’s main square. There you can ponder the identity of the unknown statue who finally replaced Franco on his horse, and if you do your research discover that it is Vinatea, who few people, apart from sages, know.

I opted for the midweek menu at 13.95€, and was treated to a Sunrise Salad (I could have gone for the Blue Beauty salad but had disturbing visions of being served by an Avatar, or Snurf, or something worse).

It was adventurous, containing cashews, avocado, lime zest and orange.

The dressing for the Greenville Burger that followed was also risqué, with guacamole, strawberry and jalapeños. The chips were chunky and with the skins still on, which is how I like them, and was served on a wooden platter with accompanying shelving.

A hazelnut ice cream wrapped it all up although coffee was another option, and a drink was also included.

They have the American habit of asking you if everything is alright a bit more than makes me comfortable, as it takes away my sacred right to grumble about the service, or anything else that doesn’t take my fancy.

There were other options on the set menu and an extensive list of options off it.

The Blue Frog is in Plaza Ayuntamiento,2.
