Who are the women who have left their mark on the streets of Valencia?
Through an in-depth study of the streets of Valencia and a biographical
index of the 105 women who have given their names to the signs, the book
Women in the Street offers a new look at our city at a halfway point between urbanism,
history and feminism. A necessary theme to protect our local history.
Gender discrimination in urban planning procedure is very common in Europe, as well as in Spain.
In contrast to Madrid 35% and Barcelona 34%, Valencia dedicates almost half of its streets to people. But for every ten signs that refer to men, only one is assigned to a woman, that is to say that only 4.5% are assigned to women, i.e. 143 streets out of which 35 of them refer to the Virgin Mary.
Our city should report a more complete and accurate heritage.
Feminist convictions at the service of a cultural and instructive approach.
We make history by taking to the streets and walking through them. They are spaces in constant movement, at the crossroads
of our exchanges and in the middle of our struggles. The streets are therefore historical testimonies and their signs reflect our society.
But the roads of Valencia inform us of an incomplete and androcentric heritage, although it is not lacking illustrious ladies. However, it is our responsibility to mark the streets as well as all those who have left their mark on them.
A local, cultural and political publication, the book is intended for lovers of local culture and tourists who are curious to know more about the history of Valencia, as well as feminists
and like-minded collectives who are committed day by day to having more inclusive urban spaces.
For this reason, it was written in three languages: Spanish, Valencian and English.
