Microalgae and Saving the World

What are microalgae? In the beginning micro-algae were the basis of life’s development on our planet; they have many advantages and may one day be able to feed humanity.

Their rapid growth and ability to adapt to the marine environment can allow the large-scale production of many types of superior algae. In addition, they have important compounds from the nutritional point of view, as well as substances with biological activities that help to prevent many diseases.

So, “why am I reading this?” you may ask.

Pollution continues to grow today, causing serious damage to our planet, not to mention climate change, the greenhouse effect, acid rain, the accumulation of rubbish and micro-plastics, especially in the oceans, the lack of recycling systems, the increase of droughts, forest fires, population growth and pessimism; these are problems that need solutions rather than lists!

Microalgae are photosynthetic micro-organisms capable of producing food from inorganic substances, being essential in the maintenance of life on Earth. They provide organic compounds with high nutritional value and oxygen to support the rest of life on the planet.

They are rich in proteins, fatty acids, carbohydrates, DHA, fibre, EPA, SOD, pigments and other natural components.

So what?

One Valencian firm, based in Mutxamel, Alicante, called Green Sea Bio System One is offering at least a partial solution by developing algae foodstuffs.

They specialize in the cultivation of Tetraselmis chuii. This is one of the most complex existing microalgae from which the highest protein level is obtained.

And it gets better. Micro-Algae require sunlight and large amounts of CO2 to grow, producing large amounts of oxygen in exchange. Thanks to this operation, CO2 can be recycled and thus contribute enormously to the environment. In addition, Micro-Algae clean and make water drinkable, so they can also be used for desalination plants and water treatment plants.
