Death Café is a non-profit association originally from England, created in 2011 by Jon Underwood. The first session took place in the kitchen of his home with a group of friends who came together to talk openly about death. After more than 10,000 events in 67 countries, Teté García and Carol de Miguel created Death Café Valencia in Espacio by Teté, in Pintor Salvador Abril, 8.
Death Café’s goal is to de-dramatize the process of death, to give it a different perspective to the current one, to move from a cultural taboo to a natural process that is what it really is. “Broadening the consciousness of death to maximize life,” explain the creators of these “Cafés de la Muerte” in Valencia.
And it is that these Valencian therapists have observed that more and more people are involved in their personal development and this, as they explain, “goes through a change of perspective and meaning to our passage through life until our end of this physical existence” and add: “at the end talking about death always leads us to talk about life.
Each meeting is unique and each time different topics are dealt with, in addition to the fact that the participants vary and contribute different points of view, more restless, more curious, more elderly, more aware. The meetings are around a cup of coffee and some pastries to talk openly about what will be our last big trip. Both García and de Miguel encourage conversations and contribute their knowledge to attend to the needs of all participants, their fears, curiosities, concerns and also to get everyone to share experiences, always with the utmost respect for all opinions.
The next meeting will be on December 11th at 7 pm.
