Corona Crisis: They Can Be Heroes

Most of us are I imagine quite comfortable buying some nice chops in the supermarket, although probably the majority of us would not be so keen on slaughtering the animal ourselves. We pay other people to do that for us and mutter something complacent about the silence of the lambs.

The corona crisis has been described as a war, and whether we like it or not, most of us are unfit for active duty and have been assigned to the home front. In the front line are our doctors, nurses, sanitary workers, police and now the army too.

While they sacrifice themselves for us, sometimes literally, it is moving to see the balcones filling not with flags or bunting, but with grateful citizens every evening, to applaud our heroes. As I have enough trouble tying my shoe laces and have not been conscripted to lend a hand, I’ll have to make do by thanking my nephew, Doctor Manuel Palomo Navarro, who for many years now has been attending patients in the ICU at Sagunto’s public hospital.

Thank you Manuel and all your brothers and sisters in harm’s way who look after us and care for us each day, with or without our applause.
